Description

Pakeezah is a monumental 1972 Indian musical romantic drama written and directed by Kamal Amrohi, widely revered as one of the most exquisite visual and musical achievements in Hindi cinema history. Over nearly a decade and a half in the making, the film became an enduring cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its evocative Urdu poetry, immortal soundtrack by Ghulam Mohammed and Naushad, and Meena Kumari’s poignant swan-song performance that continues to mesmerize cinephiles worldwide.

Early Life

The story follows Nargis, a Lucknow courtesan who flees her brothel longing for respectability, only to die giving birth to a daughter in a secluded graveyard. The girl, Sahibjaan (Meena Kumari), is taken in and raised by her aunt Nawabjaan within a glittering kotha, growing into an enchanting dancer whose heart remains pure and uncorrupted despite her surroundings. Her life changes irrevocably during an overnight train journey when an aristocratic forest officer named Salim Ahmed Khan (Raaj Kumar) enters her train compartment, catches sight of her sleeping feet, and leaves behind a romantic note admiring their beauty and urging her not to let them touch the dirt of the earth.
