Description
Description
Malkit Singh is universally acclaimed as the "King of Bhangra" and the frontman of the legendary Golden Star band, celebrated worldwide for taking Punjabi folk-pop from British dance clubs to the global mainstream. Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the biggest-selling Bhangra artist of all time and honored with an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II, Singh’s soaring, melodious vocals and vibrant charisma transformed Punjabi music into an international sensation.
Early Life
Born in the village of Hussainpur, Jalandhar, Punjab, Malkit Singh was drawn to traditional folk singing and regional poetry from his school days. While studying at Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar, he honed his vocal craft under classical mentors and competed extensively in university music competitions. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Birmingham, England—the epicentre of the emerging UK Bhangra movement—where he formed the live outfit Golden Star, fusing traditional dhol, tumbi, and chimta with western drums, brass, and synthesizer grooves.
Career
Singh achieved record-shattering global acclaim with iconic dance-floor anthems such as "Gur Nalo Ishq Mitha," "Tootak Tootak Tootiyan (Hey Jamalo)," "Jind Mahi," "Aaj Bhangra Paun Nu Jee Karda," and "Chal Hun." His energetic live band tours filled arenas across more than fifty countries, making him the definitive global ambassador of celebratory Punjabi culture. With multiple lifetime achievement honours and songs featured in international Hollywood and Bollywood soundtracks alike, Malkit Singh remains an enduring titan in the history of world music and modern Bhangra.
