Description
Description
Surjit Bindrakhia is widely celebrated as one of the most powerful and influential vocalists in the history of Punjabi music, renowned worldwide for his staggering vocal range, electric high-pitch delivery, and his signature continuous heekh (a sustained, single-breath high note). Alongside lyricist Shamsher Sandhu and legendary producer Atul Sharma, Bindrakhia revolutionized the Bhangra industry throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, delivering high-octane folk anthems that became universal dance-floor staples across the globe.
Early Life
Born in the village of Bindrakh in Rupnagar (Ropar) district, Punjab, Surjit Singh Bindrakhia initially pursued sports, excelling as a wrestler and kabaddi enthusiast during his youth. His powerful vocal stamina was nurtured through traditional Punjabi folk singing and akhada performances, where he naturally developed an astonishing lung capacity. Encouraged by local audiences captivated by his raw, penetrating voice, he turned toward professional music, soon forming a historic creative partnership with lyricist Shamsher Sandhu that would reshape the sound of modern Punjabi folk.
Career
Bindrakhia rose to meteoric international fame during the 1990s, producing an unmatched string of chart-topping hits including "Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da," "Yaar Bolda," "Tera Yaar Bolda," "Mukhda Dekh Ke," and "Jatt Di Pasand." His tracks shattered commercial records across India and the diaspora, dominating weddings, college festivals, and global Punjabi radio. Tragically passing away in 2003 at the peak of his artistic powers, Surjit Bindrakhia left behind an untouchable vocal legacy that remains an eternal gold standard for Bhangra and Punjabi folk music worldwide.
